Ecopackers from the 100+ Accelerator Won the 2020 Better World Award

Release date:December 01, 2020

Sustainability IS our business. But no one can solve sustainability challenges alone. At AB InBev, we are investing in game changing technologies across our supply chain through our 100+ Accelerator program, where we are identifying and supporting top-notch solutions for a more sustainable future. We were thrilled to deliver a virtual demo day on December 1st to share the work of our amazing startups and how they collaborate with our company to build a better future together for the next 100+ years.

We are proud to share this great news that Ecopackers, nominated by Budweiser APAC, was voted as the winner of the 2020 Better World Award from all the 100+ accelerator companies on the Demo Day. It was an amazing testament to our hard work with them over the last year.

Ecopackers, a startup from Toronto, has been working together with Budweiser APAC team in eliminating the plastic keg caps that are being used. The intent was to adopt a more sustainable, ecofriendly packaging solution than plastic and reduce its usage from our value chain. Eco-resin is developed by Ecopackers from agricultural by-products are 100% compostable replacements to traditional polystyrene and polypropylene inputs that are traditionally used for manufacturing keg caps. The eco-resins are not only compostable, but also integrate with the existing plastic technology, which means they retain the benefits of plastics without any harmful impacts on nature.

Over the last two months, Budweiser India team have carried out two pilot tests with 4 eco-resin samples to identify the best suited eco-resin that can be used to replace the keg caps. The pilot results have shown that the eco-resins are suitable for the existing keg cap manufacturing processing technology as well as have similar quality features as plastic keg caps, which are extremely promising. Keg caps made of eco-resin are estimated to help reduce approximately 1.7 Million KG CO2 emission, save about 50 Million Liters of water, and divert about 1000 tonnes of plastic waste in a year.

Ecopackers is just one of the successful stories. Two years after launching the 100+ Accelerator we have seen how our startups have skyrocketed. They are creating impact worldwide and helping us become more sustainable, innovative and transformative every day.
