OBC employees participate in the ‘Can Crush Challenge’ environmental campaign to promote the importance of recycling and the proper way to recycle aluminum cans in front of OBC headquarters in Samsung-dong, Gangnam-gu.
OBC announced on the 26th that the ‘2020 Can Crush Challenge’ environmental campaign, in commemoration of World Environment Day, was successfully completed.
The ‘Can Crush Challenge’ is an environmental campaign initiated for the public, in which ‘challengers’ post on Instagram videos or photos of themselves stepping on or crushing aluminum cans and then name the next participants in relay. The purpose of the challenge is to increase the recycling rate and promote the proper disposal of aluminum cans in commemoration of World Environment Day.
The ‘Can Crush Challenge’, was conducted for a month, with OBC CEO kicking off the challenge on OBC’s official Instagram account. The challenge then proceeded in relay format with participation by OBC employees, OBC’s college student supporters ‘OB-Rang’, as well as Korea Green Foundation, Novelis Korea, and Korea Resource Circulation Service Agency.
There were also several notable participants to the ‘2020 Can Crush Challenge’, such as actor Kwon Yul, singer Sean, and trainer Yang Chi Seung, who all joined the challenge and promoted the proper way to dispose of aluminum cans. There was also active participation from ordinary citizens who uploaded and shared their various methods for crushing cans.
OBC will also set aside 1,000 KRW for each count of content from participants of the challenge for donation. The donation will be used to support senior citizens who are making a living by collecting recyclables, such as cans and paper, through the social venture company ‘Cclim’.
The ’Can Crush Challenge’ accomplishes two goals at once; it increases the recycling rate of aluminum cans by stepping on cans to throw them away and helps senior citizens who earn money by collecting recyclables,” OBC spokesman said. “We will continue to actively contribute to solving environmental and social problems and fulfill our corporate social responsibilities.”
According to Novelis Korea, the world’s largest rolling aluminum manufacturing and recycling company, less than 30% of aluminum cans are collected and recycled in Korea, which is an extremely lower amount considering that 80% of all aluminum cans are collected. Crushing aluminum cans, to prevent foreign substances from entering them, saves space and increases the percentage of aluminum cans being recycled. As only 5% of the energy needed to produce aluminum is required for its recycling, energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 95% when aluminum is recycled.
