OBC announced on the 25th that it launches the 'Can Crush Challenge' campaign in collaboration with Korea Green Foundation and Novelis Korea, the world's largest rolling aluminum manufacturing and recycling company, to commemorate World Environment Day (June 5).
The 'Can Crush Challenge' is an environmental campaign for the public, in which 'challengers' post on Instagram videos or photos of themselves crushing aluminum cans and then name the next participants of the challenge in relay. The purpose of the 'Can Crush Challenge' is to increase the recycling rate and promote the proper ways to dispose of aluminum cans; which is to step on or crush them to prevent foreign substances from entering.
According to Novelis Korea, less than 30% of collected aluminum cans are recycled in Korea, which is an extremely lower amount considering that approximately 80% of all aluminum cans are collected. Crushing aluminum cans, to prevent foreign substances from entering them, saves space and increases the percentage of aluminum cans being recycled. As only 5% of the energy needed to produce aluminum is required for its recycling, energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 95% when aluminum is recycled. Aluminum can also be recycled indefinitely, further reducing waste generated by the use of disposable containers.
"As a company that uses aluminum cans as packaging material, we want to promote the importance of recycling and the proper way to recycle aluminum cans through a campaign that anyone can easily participate in,” OBC spokesman said, “We hope that many people participate in the 'Can Crush Challenge' campaign which will contribute to environmental conservation and also help those elderly who earn money by collecting recyclables."
The 'Can Crush Challenge' is open to anyone through Instagram. Anyone can participate by simply posting a video or photos of themselves stepping on or crushing cans on Instagram account and selecting the next three 'challengers' via hashtag. All postings must include the #캔크러시챌린지 (Can Crush Challenge) and #OB좋은세상 (OB Better World) hashtags to qualify.
OBC CEO started the 'Can Crush Challenge' on OBC's official Instagram account, as the challenge will continue for a month until June 25th. The Korea Green Foundation, which has been selected as the second 'challenger', has been promoting the importance of the environment through various activities in collaboration with OBC such as launching 'OB-Rang (with OB)', OBC's first college student supporters group, this year. Through 'OB-Rang', OBC plans to encourage university students to participate in the 'Can Crush Challenge'.
OBC will also set aside 1,000 KRW for each count of content from participants of the challenge for donation. The donation will be used to support senior citizens who are making a living by collecting recyclables, such as cans and paper, through the social venture company 'Cclim' at the conclusion of the campaign.
